Stay Home, Make Art

This blog provides art projects and other art resources to students during the spring 2020 school closures.

Draw a Story

Here is a comic I made about a little dog who is tired of kibble. When you are done reading it, make your own comic! As always, I’d love to see your work! My email is laramcannon@gmail.com

Four Panel Comic Strip

This is is an exercise from the great cartoonist and teacher Lynda Barry.

Materials

  • paper with 4 empty frames drawn on it or a 4 panel printout

  • pencil

  • pen

Process

  1. Start by drawing a character in the first panel. Who are they? What are they doing? What are they thinking? What is happening to them and/or around them?

  2. Think about where your character is standing. Fill in this setting around them in the first panel. What else is in the scene? When you think you are done, add details. When you are done with those details, add more details.

  3. What happens next? Draw it in the second panel. Don’t think about it too much, just draw it. It could be something very small, or something very big. For example, a fly could land on the characters nose or a giant plant could grow in through the window.

  4. Then what happened? Draw it in panel 3.

  5. Then what happened? Draw it in panel 4.

Voila! You have yourself a story! You can continue the same story as long as you want or end it right here.
