Unicorns
These days, when we think of unicorns, we often think of something like this illustration by Lisa Frank. Other than the horn, what makes this creature different than a normal horse? Lisa Frank uses rainbow colors, shiny surfaces , hearts and sparkles to make her unicorn look magical.
Here is how I transformed my horse drawing into a unicorn.
Unicorns have been around in art for centuries before Lisa Frank. In this tapestry (woven cloth) the unicorn purifies poison water so that the other animals may drink from the stream.
In this painting by the famous renaissance artist, Raphael, a young woman holds a teeny tiny unicorn.

Think of what pose you would like to make your unicorn in. Is it dipping it’s horn in a stream? Is it flying through the sky? Maybe its walking through a peaceful forest or perhaps it is sitting in a young maiden’s lap.
Review the lesson on drawing horses. Use the same simple shapes to build your unicorn. When you begin adding details, think about how you will make your unicorn special. Perhaps you will give it a fancy mane, or color it in rainbow colors. Maybe you will give it a beautiful, magical setting.
