Stay Home, Make Art

This blog provides art projects and other art resources to students during the spring 2020 school closures.

"A Home in My Heart" Card

SSSH! This project is top secret. Next Sunday is Mother’s Day. I am sure that you would like to surprise your mother or another special person in your life with a gift. Homemade cards are always a thoughtful gift. This card, however, is not a normal card. It is going to take some thought and a bit of time. We will construct a card that looks like a house on the outside and opens up to reveal several rooms. In each room we will write and draw a different way in which we appreciate our loved one. The card will stand up on it’s own to be proudly displayed.

  1. On the very front of the card, draw a house. You may be looking at mine and thinking, “Wow, you have hearts and flowers all over your house!” The truth is, I do not. My house is much more boring looking than this one. I like to draw houses that are fancy and whimsical - it’s more fun for me. You should draw your house in a way that is fun for you. That may mean making it look exactly like your house or it may mean that it looks like a gingerbread house. Have fun!

2. Inside the card, you will draw the rooms of the house. You will divide the space into six rooms. Each room should show something different that you love abour the person you are giving the card to. For example, I made a card for my mom. In one room she is writing at her desk, because I love her stories. In another room, we are eating dinner together, because that makes me happy. I used the top middle room to say “Happy Mother’s Day”. It might help you to use this map to organize your rooms.
